In the book, General Jimmy Doolittle describes why he ultimately chose to re-equip most of the fighter groups of the 8th Air Force with Mustangs and phase out the P-38 and P-47. The P-38 was a unique twin-engine design that had very distinct advantages and disadvantages in the European theatre at the time Doolittle made his decision.
